Final competition day - Seinäjoki, February 27, 2011

The last competition day was equally thrilling as the two earlier ones. From the Finnish point of view it offered a silver medal by Tommi Pulli as well as a Finnish record of ladies 500m. The closing ceremonies were a true triumph.

Final single distance results of 500 m+500m, Ladies

Karolina Erbanova
(CZE) won the god medal of the ladies’ distance of 500 m. Yekaterina Aydova (KAZ) won silver.  Hyun-Yung Kim (KOR) became the bronze-medalist. Elina Risku (FIN) speed-skated a new Finnish record, time 41,42, being 7th.

Yekaterina Aydova commented right after the prize giving ceremonies, that the silver medal was a dream come true. She has been very pleased with the circumstances and results in Seinäjoki, and will continue to Heerenveen and Inzell, before ending the season.

500, Men
Korean Sung-Kyu won the gold medal in the distance of men 500m at the time of 36,77. Canadian Laurent Dubreuil got a good start, but then had some minor problems. He became second but felt good about it – time 36,84. “The ice was perfect, and it is not too cold today. Feels good! The main target will be Calgary at the end of the year. “ Japanese Tsubasa Hasegawa came third, time 37,38.

 We always take the possibility of talking to as many people at the ice-stadium as possible. We would like to share some of the interviews with you.


Martina Sablikova
, a fresh world-record holder of 5000 m from Salt Lake City of 6.42,66 has been attending the Seinäjoki Junior World Championships, to support the Czeck team. She opened up about her world-record race two weeks ago. Her coach suggested her to try to break the record there and then. Next, she will have two more Championships to skate this season: Heerenveen and Inzell. Then she has the possibility to take a couple of weeks of holiday, after season. She remembers her 2005 Junior Championships in Seinäjoki with lots of good memories. It was there and then she won her first medal in the distance of 3000 meters.

Seinäjoki - Friday, February 25, 2011

General
The freezy weather was not any more disturbing in Seinäjoki, on Friday in the afternoon it was -8 degrees Celsius, and there were several records made despite of the wind.

The first ladies’ race of 500 m was started after the Opening Ceremony with official greetings from the Mayor of Seinäjoki, Jorma Rasinmäki, and the ISU Representative Roland E. Maillard from Switzerland. Local children brought all the flags of the participating 20 countries, to the ice-rink. There were a lot of viewers to watch the Friday Championships as the local children had had a day-off from school, to have the possibility to attend the hometown World Championships, starting their skiing holidays the next week.

2011 ISU World Junior Speed Skating Championships
Seinäjoki, 25-27 February 2011

It is indeed a pleasure to welcome you all on behalf of the International Skating Union to the 2011 ISU World Junior Speed Skating Championships.

Congratulations and thanks to the Suomen Luisteluliitto and to the City of Seinäjoki, that for the fourth time hosts this important ISU Event where the world’s top Junior Speed Skaters contend for the World title.

Welcome Message from the President of the Finnish Speed Skating Association

Seinäjoki has become the Finnish speed skating center during the last decades. Seinäjoki is the hometown of many Finnish national team skaters attending ISU Championships, World Cups and other international top events. All of these skaters have been trained by the club Seinäjoen Urheilijat.
